That moment when your heart just drops. Chinese athlete Mo Jiadie gave it her all in the women’s 400m hurdles semi-finals at the Tokyo World Championships today, but finished 7th in her heat with a time of 55.11 seconds – just shy of qualifying for the finals.
I know, I know. You’re probably sitting there like me, halfway across the world, trying to catch these moments that make us proud to be Chinese. But instead of cheering along, you’re staring at that annoying ‘This content is not available in your region’ message. Seriously, nothing kills the Olympic spirit faster than geo-blocking.
Mo’s performance today was tough to watch for different reasons. The 24-year-old Guangdong native had shown so much promise coming into this event. You could see the determination on her face as she attacked each hurdle, but the pace was just relentless. The top qualifiers blasted through with times under 54 seconds, leaving our girl just outside looking in.
And here’s the kicker – most of us overseas Chinese didn’t even get to witness her effort live. While our friends and family back home are sharing clips on Weibo and Douyin, we’re stuck refreshing social media for grainy replays that may or may not load properly.
I’ve been there too many times. Trying to watch CCTV’s coverage from my apartment in Vancouver, only to get that spinning buffer wheel of death. Or worse – finally getting the stream to work just in time to see the ‘race completed’ graphic. It’s enough to make you want to throw your laptop across the room!
And it’s not just track and field. From Chinese dramas that drop new episodes at midnight Beijing time to variety shows that trend for days before I can find a decent stream – the struggle is real for us diaspora folks.
But here’s what really gets me. These athletes like Mo Jiadie are out there representing China on the world stage. They train for years for these moments. The least we should be able to do is watch and support them properly, without jumping through technological hoops that would make an Olympic hurdler dizzy.
There’s something special about seeing that red jersey with the yellow star, hearing the Chinese commentary, feeling connected to home through these shared sporting moments. That connection shouldn’t be broken because of arbitrary digital borders.
So the next time you’re frustrated about missing another great moment in Chinese sports or entertainment, remember you’re not alone. Thousands of overseas Chinese are right there with you, equally annoyed at those geo-restriction messages.
What’s been your most frustrating ‘content not available’ moment? And how do you usually get around these regional blocks to stay connected to Chinese media? Share your experiences below – maybe we can all learn from each other’s workarounds!
