I was scrolling through Weibo last night when the trailer for The Kidnapping of Fluffy popped up – you know, that dark comedy starring Jiang Wu and Yan Ni about a bizarre kidnapping case. My finger hovered over the play button, but then I remembered: sigh, geo-blocked again.
The 30-second preview showed Jiang Wu (looking delightfully unhinged) trying to negotiate with someone off-camera while Yan Ni’s character nervously chain-smokes in the background. There’s this brilliant moment where the camera pans to reveal they’re actually in the same apartment – the kind of visual punchline that makes you want to watch the whole thing immediately.
Director Wang Yichun (The Summer is Gone) seems to have crafted another gem – the kind of movie that makes you laugh uncomfortably while questioning who the real criminals are. From what I gathered between buffering screens, it’s about how ‘a fool used as a weapon’ and ‘the clever outsmarted by their own schemes’ collide in one fateful night.
But here’s the kicker: my cousin in Toronto messaged me the exact same trailer yesterday with "Can’t wait to watch this!" I had to break it to her – unless she’s got a solution for the ‘This content is not available in your region’ message, we’re both out of luck come August 16th when it premieres on iQiyi.
Remember last year when we all missed Suzhou River because of licensing issues? I ended up watching a camrip with Malaysian subtitles – not exactly the cinematic experience Wang Yichun intended. This time, I’m determined to watch The Kidnapping of Fluffy properly, even if I have to (legally) trick the system into thinking I’m back in Shanghai.
So here’s what I’ve learned after three years of missing out on everything from variety shows to historical dramas while living abroad…
